Matthew joined Caledonian Economics as a director in 2007. He holds an MA in Electrical Sciences from Cambridge University and an MBA from INSEAD. He has over 15 years of experience in consulting and project management. His experience is wide ranging, with a particular specialisation in using financial modelling of businesses, their markets and competitors to gain a competitive advantage. Key experience includes:

* Working with a private equity company, managing detailed financial analysis and modelling in the assessment of attractiveness of potential investments and in the presentation of business cases to outside investors and partners. Created detailed financial models, used as the basis for understanding the business, shadow pricing, negotiating valuations with outside investors, and writing offer documents, business plans and term sheets. He remains Group Financial Director for one of the company’s investments.

* Developing a multiple regression based tool to allow analysis of pricing for the portfolio of a major spirits distributor. This tool not only allows maximisation of profits but is also a key part of the organisational strategy to unite the company behind a shared understanding of the business and its goals.

* Working for Mars & Co, a French strategy consulting company. Here Matthew was responsible for many projects including: a £5bn Portfolio review of over 40 individual country operating units to understand acquisition and divestment priorities and to redefine financial targets; rationalisation of the operations of a major UK brewer to reflect market conditions and refocus onto a core product including major brand divestment; several market entry and risk management strategies for investments of up to up to £250 million in Eastern and Central Europe; competitive financial benchmarking to highlight opportunities to grow profitability and reduce competitors’ profits.
